Shun Kakei (筧駿 Kakei Shun) is a linebacker of Kyoshin Poseidon and the fourth tallest on the team, serving as its most prominent player both ability and plot-wise. Shun is the first character to allude to the existence of a "real" Eyeshield 21 in the series.

Appearance[]

Shun is a tall young man with straight dark hair (black in the manga, dark cyan in the anime) and slanted turquoise eyes. He is relatively lean, with relatively thick eyebrows and signature thick black lines around his eyes that give his eyes and even more slanted appearance.

Personality[]

Shun and Sena complimenting each other

Shun and Sena after the match deflecting each other's praise and praising the other instead.

Shun is calm and driven, though he is rather shy outside of games. He may be seen as no-nonsense, which is true, but only in the context of games and matches. He is shown to be very humble, likely a result of his time in Phoenix Middle School, and has similar sportsmanship to many other players Deimon faces throughout the series.

Before he encountered the true Eyeshield 21 or went to America, Shun was very self-confident but without founding, though he didn't realize it at the time. Going to the States and being shown just how weak he was compared to them drove him to quit football, but he did still like the sport and missed it. Upon hearing from his friends about another Japanese player who was making it big in the youth level, he went to go see him play, and realized fully that he was being too cocky before. Shun returned to football, determined to learn from his mistakes and, eventually, fulfill his promise to Eyeshield 21 to play against him again in another official match. This is where he learned his drive, and love for the sport.

He became very intense in the context of football, and very passionate about Eyeshield 21, having idolized him in the time they were apart. He was willing to keep trying to get people to join the Kyoshin Poseidon all the way into July, willing to make a fool of himself for the sake of the game. This determined and passionate nature was what attracted Kengo Mizumachi to join, making Kyoshin into a powerhouse without just Shun as an ace.

His passion and love for the sport seem to make the other members of the Kyoshin Poseidon gravitate toward him, acting as an almost honorary leader despite none of them seen as such. He holds great respect for his fellow players and has yet to be seen looking down on someone. He is supportive as a teammate, and helps dramatically increase morale.

History[]

Shun declaring war on the fake Eyeshield 21

Shun "declaring war" on the fake Eyeshield 21 (Sena).

Shun was very tall for a Japanese, already being about 1.60m in elementary school. With everyone's praised and his lack of challenge, he became cocky and self-important, scoffing at his coach who told him to properly use his height and long limbs to play. He attended Phoenix Middle School in the United States, where he witnessed the play of this true Eyeshield 21, a running back for Notre Dame University's affiliated middle school (later revealed to be Takeru Yamato).

Amazed by the prowess of a Japanese player, Kakei became reinvigorated with American football after having been frustrated by his inferiority to the American players around him. When Kakei's team Arizona University's affiliated middle school played against Notre Dame, Kakei and Eyeshield 21 played against each other on a single play, and while Kakei lost, Eyeshield 21 promised to play him again. Kakei trained hard, practicing and becoming the team's ace player.

However, by the time Phoenix played Notre Dame the following year, Yamato had departed for Japan, and the Notre Dame players had been instructed not to speak of his existence but most of the players along with the coach were really mad about not being able to speak about him because they respect him and were really mad at Donald Oberman for doing such a rotten thing. Kakei returned to Japan as well, determined to find Eyeshield 21 again, and joined the American football team at Kyoshin. Under Kakei's direction, the Poseidon adapted their belief that height was essential to winning American football, and the team recruited several more tall players.

Autumn Tournament Arc[]

Sena passing Shun

Sena finally passing Shun.

When he learned of the "fake" Eyeshield 21, Sena, playing for the Devil Bats, Shun declared him an impostor, knowing the Eyeshield 21 he had encountered in America to be taller and stronger. Shun despises Sena and believes him unworthy of his title before and then throughout the Kyoshin-Deimon match, and is determined to expose his inferiority. After being defeated at the end of the game by Sena's newest technique, the Devil Bat Hurricane, Shun deems Sena worthy of the title Eyeshield 21, but warns Sena that the Eyeshield 21 he met in America will one day stand against him.

Kanto Tournament Arc[]

Chrismas Bowl Arc[]

Shun becomes a friendly acquaintance of the Devil Bats, appearing at several of their games as a spectator. When he learns that Sena will play against Takeru, who he believes and later confirms to be the true Eyeshield 21, Shun vows to teach Kazuki Jumonji all of his hand techniques in the hope that he will be able to help Sena defeat Takeru.

Physical Abilities[]

Kakei is distinguished by his great height, long arms. While not incredibly physically powerful, he has a slender build, and draws his strength from using his great height to gain leverage on his opponents. He is capable of holding back or even shoving to the ground most players shorter than himself with a single hand. His long arms also provide him with an extended reach, which allows him to counter against a runner's feints more effectively. Kakei is also a strong strategist, personally being able to discern how to defeat the Wishbone. He is named one of the best three linebackers at the end of the Fall Tournament.

Techniques[]

  • Moby Dick Anchor - Named after the whale in Herman Melville's American novel Moby Dick. Kakei's signature tackle. Kakei spreads his arms wide and tackles anything caught inside his reach. This is Kakei's counter to the Devil Bat Ghost, and the move that gave Sena the determination to invent what is now called the Devil Bat Hurricane.
